I've been reading about 70 years and Blackbird is one of those rare nuggets of pure gold in a whole mountain of clay . It plays out like the blues, full of riffs and bass and gravel that spin themselves into a mirror of soul not ashamed to get down and dirty and come up dragging us into a light we refused to open our eyes to before. Don't let the stomp and shuffle and guffaws fool you into thinking it's not about you, you ain't gonna get off that easy. I was in Gadsden Alabama for about three months in 1958, and he's not telling any lies. It was my first experience with deep southern segregationist views. A great morality tale told by a masterful and powerful writer about a very unique character.

About this story:

What you are about to read is part of an unpublished novel, based on the absolute worst time of my life: The Winter of 1988-89. It was such a bad time, so many bad things happened all at once, that I am very surprised that I did not kill myself, or someone else. I seriously thought about doing both.

As God only knows if I will ever finish the whole novel, I wanted to share at least part of it, this part, with the world. What you are about to read is true. I was so bad off I was seeing and talking to "Jesus" at the time. And "he" was answering.

I wish what you are about to read had not happened. But it did happen. You may hate me for what I did, but I was doing the best I could with all I was facing at the time. I just could not handle any more.

In what you are about to read, which takes place near the end of the unfinished novel, I called myself Ben Devaux. But the character is me. It is what I saw, felt, and did. I am responsible for it all. Will Bevis.

Soul-baring candor
By Wanda Tillman
This is not an easy or a happy read; it is a story about a difficult time in a young man's life. If you have a heart, it will be broken. However, there are times when we need to have our hearts broken, because it is at those times we learn the most about who we are, who we want to be, and who we wish we were. It is how we grow. Been there, done that. It hurts . . . a lot. . . every time.

This is far more than a story about a dog; it is also a story about growing up and accepting responsibility. It is a story about knowing oneself and in that task there is only room for the brutal honesty mentioned on the cover. When one reads this story, accepting the lesson contained in it, one is enabled to grow in humanity and knowledge of self and of one's responsibility. It brings to mind a quote from Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms" : "The world breaks everyone; and afterward many are strong at the broken places." This is not a story to help one grow accustomed to indifference or wrong-doing, it is a story to break one's heart so it can become stronger. It is only by recognizing ones faults and weaknesses, that one can identify one's strength. It is only by challenging those weak places that they can be transformed into strengths. May your heart grow strong from being broken by this story.

I cried
By Kristy Watkins
The story is too short to cost any money at all, but in the end I'm glad I did spend the money, because it really made me cry and I felt so attached to my own dog at the end I just hugged him and hugged him. It made me so thankful I haven't had to make those kinds of choices for him, but I hope I never will either.

It's a Weeper
By Madagascar Penguin
This is one of those stories about regret over a hard decision that had to be made. Anyone who has lived long enough and has not lived a completely pampered life has at least one moment like this that haunts him/her. When the decision is flawed, another living creature bears the consequences one way or another. In this case it is a dog. It picked at some of my old scars from years ago when I worked as a veterinary assistant, where I saw grown men break apart in tears as soon as they were in the exam room away from other clients.

After reading this, I had to go dig up my daughter's copy of "Puppies for Sale" by Dan Clark and watch the Balducci short film "Clown" on YouTube in order to counter the mood and pull myself back into a sense of balance. While Clark's and Balducci's stories are fiction, I have at least been fortunate enough to see similar stories in real life. So I wound up spending about a half hour getting weepy three times.

I always hope that Jesus (as in this story), fate, karma, or whatever will help more critters and people find each other more often.
