Mailer as Literary Critic Intrigues

There is much to argue with in "The Prisoner of Sex", and though I'm in sympathy with the aims of the womens' movement, I cheer Mailers' defense of the artists right to use their sexuality and sense of the sensual world as proper fodder for poetic expression.
There are times when Mailer- the- mystic clogs up an otherwise lacerating arguement,where his romanticism veers dangerously towards a lunatics hallucinations, but his defense of Miller, Lawrence and Genet against the clumsier moments of Millets' orginal critique in "Sexual Politics" is literary criticism at its most emphatic.
"Prisoner of Sex" is, I'm afraid, incoherant at times, but there are long passages of rich knock-out prose that demonstrate why Mailer is thought by many to be one of the premiere stylists of the times, and if nothing else, his lyrical defense of D.H.Lawrence is worth the purchase by itself.

Mailer shreds the cant of women's liberation

There is much to argue with in "The Prisoner of Sex", and though I'm in sympathy with the aims of the womens' movement, I cheer Mailers' defense of the artists right to use their sexuality and sense of the sensual world as proper fodder for poetic expression. What makes the book important is precisely the fact that Mailer felt there was a need for a man to stand up and have a word against and about the rising tide of Feminist theory; while many male writers were too confused, adrift in daydreams of irony or bottled up rage, and while the academy was surrendering its arms without a shot being fired, Mailer spoke up and wrote that there was a profound and important difference between the sexes, and that while social justice must and will prevail regarding the rights of women in the work place and overall social sphere, one cannot maintain, straight faced, that the only difference between the sexes has to do with genitalia.

Overall pleasing review with an agreeable portrait of Millet

This work, although not typical of Mailer, was of his best. Mailer portrays his views of feminism by tearing apart Kate Millet and her take on feminism. Despite the common perception of this book as an anti-feminist work, Mailer clearly respects the basis of feminism.

At first sight it may appear that the current work is a guidebook for the prospective research worker and thus has little relevance for the non-specialist student of geology. We hope this will prove to be far from the case. The methodological approach has an inherent interest because it can provide the reader with problems he can solve for himself, and as an almost incidental consequence he will acquire a satisfying understanding.

My professor told me I should buy this book, and sure it's old, but I have found it to be very helpful. I've mainly used the chapter explaining trace elements and partitioning, but if all the chapters are as useful as this one, then you can't go wrong buying this book.

The interpretation of igneous rocks

This title it's an outstanding book showing how data from petrogenetic, geochemical and fiel studies can be used to formulate and test petrogenetic hypotheses. This book covers such subjects related to igneous petrology as the concept of fractionation, chemical variation diagrams, phase diagrams, the experimental petrology of natural rocks, trace-element and isotope geochemestry, and petrography, all in relation with its methodology. The appendices cover rock nommenclature, major element composition and CIPW norms of important igneous rock types, norm calculations, and some representative mineral analyses. This title is full with diagrams and photographic illustrations that are an accompany to the text and are well integrated with it. This book brought a good help in the study of igneous petrology, and should be of serious interest to all students, tachers and researchers needing to understand this subject beyond an introductory level.

Front-line or first time Sales Manager - good resource

"The Art of Mastering Sales Management" is a good book on the subject, especially for first time sales managers. It covers everything from goal setting to time management. The books breaks down the different skills sets and functions of both salespeople and managers and then offers a methodology for each.

Mr. Cook includes some unique chapters on subjects not often explored: for example the fact that you have to manage in several directions (up, down, in and out), or in other words, with your superiors, with your direct reports, within the company and with outside entities, e.g. customers, suppliers, etc. There is also a portion of the book devoted to global sales.

The rest of the book is pretty standard stuff - but it's all there: forecasting, motivation, listening skills, running meetings, negotiation, problem solving, etc. Mr. Cook's organization is interesting and useful for people who like workbook and case-study type learning. He includes case-studies, questions, and examples so that the information gets reflected and acted upon, not just read.

There are few exceptional books on sales management. Most, like this one, cover ground that if you don't know already I can't imagine how you became a manager. If you have to be taught listening skills or negotiation you may need more time as a salesperson. That said, "The Art of Mastering Sales Management" is a good read that covers the scope of the sales manager's job. If you're new to sales management or hiring a new manager this is a good book to start with.

Great handbook for Japanese grammar.

Japanese Grammer: a pillar for becoming proficient

I have been studying Japanese on my own. Being in a line of work where self-study is a requirement for advancement, I needed a resource that would help explain the general structure of the Japanese language, so I could organize a plan for acquiring the language at my own pace. This book is one of those pillars. If you have a solid knowledge of the hiragana and a basic yet formal understanding of the syntax of written Japanese, this book will work for you. On each page, the kanji are presented with rubi the FIRST time. After that, you have to remember the reading just for that page. The rubi is repeated elsewhere. Lack of kanji memorization is not a hindrance to using this book. The illustrations are basic diagrams in black and white that explain the sentence structure. There are no pictures of people, locations,etc.

The author does a clinical, yet thorough job of explaining how the Japanese language is organized. It helps you to anchor yourself in the sea of words and sounds. The explanations do not require expertise in linguistics. It is not leisure reading but persistence should pay off.
The key is getting clued into the organization of the foreign language so you can identify your weak spots and better direct your studies: particles/postpositions, verbal and adjectival types, etc. You do not need to be an expert in everything at once. But the basic grammar is important if you want to be a fluent speaker. This will not automatically make you speak fluent Japanese. That takes time, practice and LANGUAGE CDS. But, it may help you with listening and reading comprehension of authentic Japanese. You want to understand enough to build up the confidence that you can become a competent reader, writer and speaker of Japanese.

Absolutely excellent

I've been studying Japanese for 20 years, and I own many grammar books. If I had to pick two of the best, this would be one of them, along with "Using Japanese" which I also review here on Amazon. This covers all the basic and intermediate grammar you would need in order to communicate comfortably in every day life and beyond. I honestly don't have anything negative to say about this book. It is well-structured, thorough, and gives tons of examples for each grammatical concept. If you want a good reference book to come back to for years to come, this won't let you down.
