Processes of change and learning are seen in a new perspective and it is shown that expert practices depend on how persons conduct their everyday lives. To grasp this, Dreier developed a theory of persons that is based on how they conduct their lives in social practice. This theory is grounded in critical psychology and social practice theory and is also relevant for understanding other expert practices such as education.

About the Author
Ole Dreier is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Copenhagen, where he received both his MA and his PhD. He is a leading scholar in activity theory and critical psychology in Europe and combines work on the development of theory with research directed at developing practices in the fields of psychotherapy, health care, and education. He is a member of the Danish interdisciplinary Center for Health, Humanity, and Culture and an approved specialist in psychotherapy and supervision. Dreier has held the Wilhelm-Wundt chair in Leipzig and has been affiliated with universities in Mexico, Germany, and the United States. He is a member of the International Society for Theoretical Psychology and the International Society for Cultural and Activity Research.

Non Fiction Book of the Month

Fascinating history of money from the ancient Greeks to today. I give this my non fiction book of the month club award..of course subjective since I'm the only one with a vote. I became interested in economics after the crash of '08 and read what was available on Kindle. I should have started here. It's written almost like a text book with a chapter review after every chapter. Easy to read and not complicated; creates a time-line of how money becomes debased, particulary paper money. Good read for everyone whether interested in economics or not. Certainly should give you something to think about. How debased can currency get? I just bought 5 6 trillion dollar Zimbabwe notes for 5 bucks, make great birthday gifts.

Brilliant Book on the History of Money

Given the title you'd think this is just another book complaining about the Federal Reserve. In reality this book is much more than that. It goes into the History of Money and how it was used in the ancient Mediterranean. There is also a lot of history of the American Revolution including why our currency has the same name as Spanish Currency as opposed to British. Not to mention the dollar was first defined in silver instead of gold.

When it comes to the History of the Depression this book really pulls ahead. You may be surprised at some of the campaign statements made by Roosevelt and the actions of Herbert Hoover. This book also has the actual acts used in the gold confiscation. I highly recommend this book for anyone curious about the economic history of the U.S.

Most Australian universities today are dependent on overseas students to fill admission quotas. Overseas students must first convince the universities that they have sufficient skills to deal with the rigours of academic writing. This book is designed to do just that. Writing Academic English has been written for intermediate to advanced international and English as a Second Language high school students who are writing essays to gain good marks before they enter university. This book will continue to be very useful for students who have gained admission to university because most academic writing is expository in nature. In the same way the book should appeal to native speakers of English who need to develop or refresh their basic composition skills.
The authors' straightforward writing style is reflected in the book as their personal teaching philosophy. The book has numerous attributes, the first one of which is the exclusion of double page organisational charts at the beginning of the book. These well-meaning charts dividing the book into sections, categories, or chapters have hopefully been relegated to the far flung corners of publishing houses for all eternity. Instead, the contents of Writing Academic English are clearly stated and spaciously arranged. It is crucial that books of this type are effectively organised with the important components taught in small step-by-step units. The authors' commitment to concision and clarity is again reinforced with clear illustrations and examples.
The book is divided into three parts and fourteen chapters with no less than four appendices. Intelligent use has been made of a word processor, the charts, diagrams, shading around boxes, and highlighted headings add character to the presentation without overdoing it.
