About the Author

Grant Jarvie is Professor and Deputy Principal at the University of Stirling, and is also working with the University of Toronto. However, from July 2012 he’ll be professor of Sport at the University of Edinburgh. He was born in Scotland and went to school in Edinburgh. He advises governments on a wide range of areas, including sport, education, health, research and the funding of universities. He has held ministerial appointments to the board of national sports agencies and comes from an international sporting family. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2009 in recognition of his work to promote international cooperation between countries. He has led three departments and two research centres across four universities. He has served as acting principal/provost and has been invited to talk all over the world.

James Thornton is an international management graduate from Heriot-Watt University. Upon completion of his degree he moved to Wellington to work in sports marketing and volunteer with Street Football Aotearoa, the Homeless World Cup’s partner organisation in New Zealand. James is now based in London and works as a marketing executive for an events company.

The benefit a man receives is in his Masonic education, not from what he will get from another Mason. The truth is we do as Masons communicate with each other and have attempted, although individually, to influence our culture from the moral and intellectual lessons learned within the Craft. We communicate and leave our mark culturally; just as other people communicate and leave their mark culturally. Inaccurate, exhausting, and not worth buying. Really!

NOTE ADDED 7/11/14: Do you notice how today - suddenly - there are all these 5 star reviews by "readers" who didn't buy this book (note the absence of "Verified Purchaser" on their review) and haven't reviewed anything else or, at the most, one other item in the past? Does this look a bit suspicious to you? Do you think someone's playing games after my negative review below? A logical conclusion isn't it?

Thumbing through this book on its arrival, I was pleased to see a VERY exhaustive compilation of footnotes comprising 76 pages of this 176 page book. Upon looking closer, 95% of them appeared to be taken from an online copy of Pike's Morals & Dogma. Then it was on to the Foreward by the well-known "Anon" who, curiously, used particularly bad punctuation - identical to that found throughout this work.

Proceeding ahead, sentence structure became dense (if not completely obtuse) due to the author's lack of proper usage of the comma and the semi-colon. But it went progressively downhill. When 3/4ths of each page consisted of quotations from Pike and the few author-written sentences were practically impossible to understand, I'd thought that structure might be the worst of the book's problems. I was wrong.

On page XVI of the Preface, the author boldly asserts that Jefferson and John Adams were Masons.

Book and Audio Narration - pure joy for Regency lovers.

A lovely set of three stories told with excellent style. I really loved these earlier Metzger works in part because they are Heyeresque, with a touch of Carla Kelly, and give one the pleasures of the genre with none of the gaping stupidities which have developed by some authors over the years. I also purchased, for an additional few dollars, the professional narration to this book, which really added to my enjoyment.

So, if you are looking for a Regency book that satisfies, this collection of 3 stories will certainly do you well!

I was happy to find this collection recently as I thought I'd read all the Metzgers on Kindle. I always enjoy reading them as they are light-hearted and fun, sweet and happy ever after. This collection is not disappointing and well worth the money.

Fantastic Read

The first story has a conniving little sister, the second has a misunderstanding about who the hotel manager is, and the third has God and the Devil trying to influence a man’s actions. How could you not like reading this collection? It has something for everyone!

Ms. Metzger writes light, humorous stories about love. She draws you in, entices you with details and makes you love her characters. These three novellas will demonstrate her skill to you and make you smile as you read them.

The first story, Autumn Glory, is about a mother who is going to marry her daughter’s off so she can have some freedom. She loves them, but the oldest is almost a spinster and she won’t stand for that. As long as she’s playing match mate, she might as well get them all lined up. The most amusing part of this story is the fact that the man she is working with in her planning is the unseen male that her mother has chosen for her older sister. She tells him how awful that person is while not realizing who he is. That really tickled me!

The Management Requests has a wounded soldier who is staying at the hotel to get away from his sister-in-law and her demands. He has to stay downstairs because of his leg, there are no rooms left there, and he pays a premium to take over the office. Just how that complicates his life is unexpected and takes the form of a young woman looking for a beau who only wanted her money. The dance between those two and the chapters being titled with management requests is great.

My personal favorite though was A Match Made in Heaven or Hell. A soldier is close to death on the field and God and the Devil are fighting over who gets him. How much more fantastic a plot can you imagine? Hugh will never be the same again and that’s a good thing!

Are you looking for a fun easy read that you fit in between present wrapping and cooking? Look no further. These stories have been gathered from out of print anthologies and presented in a new edition for you. I really enjoyed this collection and it was a fast read. You need to give it a try.

About the Author

Dalton Iwazaki

Dalton Iwazaki lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil and started working with technology in 1994 in a school lab, at the age of 17. As a system administrator, Dalton configured and maintained the network (Novel 3.12), the computers (Window 3.11, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95), and the Internet. He also took his first steps in programming by building the school website in ASP and a computer voting system to simulate the election process in Delphi.

In 1999, Dalton moved to a new company and started working with Java development. During this period, he worked on many Java server-side applications and dug deep to understand the use of JDBC, JMS, JMX, XML, and multithreaded applications. He built some frameworks from scratch to help the development, and started working on the Application Server world with IBM Websphere, Resin, Tomcat, JBoss, and BEA WebLogic. Until 2004, Dalton moved around to other companies working either as a Java developer or Java Architect.

In 2004 and 2005, Dalton worked as a Software Development Manager; he lead 10 developers to build the entire website, provisioning and back office operations of a new ISP Provider with a variety of integrations and languages, such as Java, VB, C#, Perl, and PHP. Dalton then moved to a large international bank to work as a project manager in 2005 and 2006. His role was to manage the Internet Banking and Credit Card portals and integrate the business clients and the development team. From 2006 to 2008, Dalton started and worked on his own company, a design agency focused on the delivery of web solutions.

In 2008, Dalton started working in partnership with Oracle Consulting on the infrastructure level of the WebLogic Server. In the following year, Dalton started a new company named VN Tecnologia, an IT professional services provider and Oracle Partner Network member. Working together with Oracle's clients and projects, Dalton's solid expertise in infrastructure and Java development are a rare combination used in his specializations - WebLogic Server configuration, administration, troubleshooting, and tuning. WebLogic Advanced Administration Topics Explained

I recently read "Oracle WebLogic Server 12c Advanced Administration Cookbook" by Dalton Iwazaki after being provided a copy by the publisher for review. The book consists of "recipes" of WebLogic administration topics and includes a description of how to perform the task via the browser-based console, via WLST (WebLogic Scripting Tool command line), and an explanation of "how it works," basically what is the purpose of the steps you've executed. The "how it works" sections were my favorite because it gives some context to the steps and occasionally offers "rules of thumb" that are helpful for WebLogic administrators to be aware of. I liked how the book focused strictly on advanced administration topics and didn't stray into development topics.

The author (an experienced WebLogic consultant) also explains some of the new features of WebLogic 12c, such as RESTful Management services. I was happy to see recipes on how to customize the user interface of the administration console and how to recover encrypted usernames and passwords stored in WebLogic. The recipes have given me a lot of ideas that can definitely help me become a better WebLogic administrator, so I am excited to apply the knowledge I gained from this book. It wasn't just a re-hash of documentation, it was real-world recommendations from someone who knows WebLogic from working with it for years.

From a quality standpoint, the book was well edited and I didn't notice very many typos or egregious grammar mistakes. I was impressed by the number of experienced reviewers that reviewed the book prior to its publication, and I'm sure it helped make a great book even better.

For the next edition of this book, it would be good to see an expanded explanation of NodeManager and how it works. NodeManager can be a little bit tricky to master so I would love to see the author explain it further and share his insights on any "gotchas" that one may encounter while using it. I think the part on JRockit Mission Control could also use a few more recipes to further explain its capabilities. A chapter on the nuances of deploying applications could also be helpful. In contrast, there is a lot of information on configuring WebLogic's Java Message Service (JMS) capabilities.

I was sad to see this book end because I learned a lot from it. I had never gotten much out of the WebLogic console's help documentation, so this book helped me understand some of the server's advanced features I had never been able to decipher previously.

Full disclosure: Packt provided a review copy to me. I work with WLS since 12 years and have some experience ;)

The Content
I can't help but this books has something in common with the other "recipes oriented book". One main difference is, that it is organized in chapters and does not only list the individual recipes but tries to order them a little bit more, which makes sense to me. In chapter one, installation and configuration is covered (11 recipes). Chapter two explains how to set up a WebLogic Cluster (9 recipes). In Chapter three you're guided through how to configure and tune JDBC resources focused on high availability (8 recipes). JMS configuration for clusters is covered in chapter four (11 recipes). Chapter five deals with monitoring and available tools (7 recipes). Followed by chapter six which covers some troubleshooting tips for common problems (8 recipes). Configuration for production environments with respect to resilience, stability, and performance is covered in chapter seven (9 recipes). And finally chapter eight dives into security configuration (5 recipes).
If I didn't count wrong this makes 68 recipes on 260 content pages. Compared with the 64 recipes of Frank's book this a bit more than half of his book. Every recipe Starts with a "Getting ready" preface which basically explains what is going to happen and what should be in place already. The "How to do it..." section gives a detailed, step-by-step explanation which is followed by the "How it works..." paragraph summarizing what exactly happened. The "There's more ..." and "See also" sections point you to related recipes or individual hints from the author.

Writing and Style
Another easy read. Thank you to the editors and the author for taking care of not native speakers. The step-by-step explanations make this easy to follow for beginners and occasional screenshots help with details. "Reading" from front to back surprisingly doesn't make lot of sense. It is more like a toolbox which solves your issues if you run into them. I did compare it with the "other" cookbook and reading this one wasn't equality surprising as Frank's book was. The main difference here is that it has word "Administration" in it's title. I guess it is clear that this is not primarily meant for developers. Even if it would be a good start for everyone which has to deal with WebLogic and really don't want to dive into administration too much.

Conclusion and recommendation
I like it. It covers all the basics and advanced topics I consider important for administrators but also for developers who need to understand the basic concepts and individual advanced topics like cluster configuration for production. I wasn't expecting a developer centered book which also added to this positive experience.

Advance cookbook

The last book of WLS 12.1.1, Packt brings us a 285 pages product, a comfortable size, not very big neither a flyer, so, easy to read and search as a reference, kind of cookbook with high availability and clustering point of view.

First pages are very detailed in how to install and run a vanilla WLS domain (including Node Manager, Machines, etc.). Including WLST and Admin Console. Some aesthetic tips, but not sure if this ha Administrator flavor.

Later comes deployments in different approaches (tools actually:) ). Next Chapter about High Availability and Clustering fine grained; address listen, Broadcasting, Unicast, Multicast, etc.

Then JDBC, again with HA/Clustering thru WLST/Admin Console... here it is more verbose about algorithms, Parameters of Data Sources, Gridlink, Multidatasource, a must for any Admin.

JMS, focused to HA again, using all typical resources of it: Bridges, Persistent Stores, etc.

A good, perhaps more useful , about monitoring, tips & tricks on this which is not very documented, and this time is very admin focused. Then recipes for WLS 12.1.1 troubleshooting for OutOfMemory (a very common scenario).

Finishing with security & SSL, concurrent questions and answer on this topic (X.509 certificates, keystore, etc.)

I can say that has some known areas, but improves in another that many times are left for the user, and it doesn't appear in the official documentation.

About the Author

Darlene Clark Hine is a Board of Trustees professor of African-American studies and professor of history at Northwestern University.�She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former president of the Organization of American Historians and of the Southern Historical Association.�Hine received her B.A. at Roosevelt University in Chicago and her MA. and Ph.D. from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Hine has taught at South Carolina State University and at Purdue University.�She also taught at Michigan State University where she was John A. Hannah professor of history. She was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University. She is the author and/or co-editor of 15 books, most recently The Harvard Guide to African American History (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2000), co-edited with Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and Leon Litwack. She co-edited a two-volume set with Earnestine Jenkins, A Question of Manhood: A Reader in Black Men’s History and Masculinity (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1999, 2001) and one with Jacqueline McLeod, Crossing Boundaries: Comparative History of Black People in Diaspora (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2000pk). About the Author

Gill Bennett, MA, OBE was Chief Historian of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office from 1995-2005, and Senior Editor of the UK's official history of British foreign policy, Documents on British Policy Overseas. As a historian working in government for over thirty years, she offered historical advice to twelve Foreign Secretaries under six Prime Ministers. A specialist in the history of secret intelligence, she was part of the research team working on the official history of the Secret Intelligence Service, written by Professor Keith Jeffery and published in 2010. She is now involved in a range of research, writing and training projects for various government departments.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the author of this book, held the full time post of chief historian at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a rare exception as the only governmental department to have, in resident, a full time Historian.
The book Six Moments of Crisis does not provide any essentially new analysis of the emergencies it debates. However, its great asset lies in the author's accepting of how foreign policy decisions are made. If you look at one example, namely Britain and the EU.
It is interesting to note that UK's policy towards the European Community and in trying to join it - some 40 years ago was conceived so as 'to retain the level of influence in Washington of which exclusion from the Common Market/EU threatened to reduce'. As Prime Minister Cameron mulls over a referendum over EU membership, President Obama warns PM Cameron - Britain must stay in a 'strong EU', the people change but the politics remain the same.
For this reader, this book makes for a perfect text for the lay person as well as the student of international relations, what it does do it shows us is that you cannot apply obscure perceptions and theories that bear slight relation to the real world.
This is a body of work that is well written, the author shows skill at interpreting documents and then teasing out those segments of interest and import. Her resources were archival data that came from official Whitehall record, the personal notebooks of the cabinet secretary and plethora of ministerial memoirs and accounts.

This is a fascinating book, from which I learnt a great deal. Gill Bennett takes a detailed but tightly defined look at the decision-making process behind six turning points in Britain's post-war foreign policy. The events are the Korean War (1950); the Suez Crisis (1956); Britain's first application to join the European Common Market (1961); the decision to withdraw military power from East of Suez (1968); excluding 105 Soviet spies (1971); and dispatching a task force to the Falkland Islands (1982).

Each of the six decision points was under a different Prime Minister, from Clement Atlee to Margaret Thatcher, so along the way we learn something of each of those Prime Ministers' style, of the other politicians in their Cabinets, and of the background circumstances and events having an impact on the decisions made. Momentous as they proved to be, most of the decisions were made fairly quickly and without serious dissent. Only the decision to withdraw from East of Suez was revisited. In that case, the ultimate action of withdrawing, but not until nine months after the originally proposed date, seems so neat that one wonders if the 'compromise' implemented was Prime Minister Harold Wilson's private objective right from the beginning.

Gill Bennett sometimes strays into providing more background information than seems to fit with her originally stated intention, but in virtually all cases one longs for yet more. On the East of Suez decision, Foreign Secretary George Brown was given a hard time by Secretary of State Dean Rusk, and telegrams were received from President Lyndon B Johnson "expressing outrage" at the British proposals, but all this was brushed aside by Wilson. Wilson had recently met Johnson in Australia and reported that Johnson understood the British position and could not have been friendlier. In any search for the truth, an exploration of American archives, admittedly well beyond the scope of the present study, is obviously called for.

And just six studies of foreign policy decisions is not enough. How did the Cabinet perform when the Suez venture met with disaster? What about the Wilson Government's decision to re-apply for European Community membership after the Macmillan Government's application was rejected? And the Thatcher Government's decision to simply stage an orderly withdrawal from Hong Kong when the 99 year lease expired in 1997? Ultimately, even fifty studies might not suffice.

The appetite for more produced by these studies is of course nothing but a commendation for them. Whether they are being read by an older person who remembers at least some of the events as they were presented at the time through newspapers and other media, or by a much younger formal or informal student of politics, there is a vast amount here to link to existing knowledge of the period and to research further.

Although this is a relatively slim volume, the text is rather densely packed (more than 400 words to a page), and it comes with many notes, a bibliography, a good index, and some well-chosen contemporary photographs of key players.
