about tone production, nails, and lots

of tips on overcoming technical difficulties

Great Book for Low Intermediate and Above Players

I have been playing classical guitar for many years. Like many players I got to the point of being "pretty good" but could never break through the invisible wall of getting to "really good". Anyone who has been playing for a while knows just how hard that is. I finally started a systematic search to find the resources to get me there. I found this book in a roundabout way. I was watching William Kanengiser's excellent DVD "Classical Guitar Mastery". In my opinion it is one of the best instructional videos I have ever seen for intermediate players. He pays tribute at the end to Lee F. Ryan and his book "The Natural Classical Guitar" which is also excellent but hard to find. Ryan's book has a bibliography which made reference to Charles Duncan, and he gave this book a high recommendation..

The reason I like this book is that it deals with the finer aspects of the mechanics of playing well in great detail. That includes right and left hand position issues and proper finger movement in relation to the strings. If you were to read the book as a beginner it would probably be too much information and it would not mean that much. After you have struggled for a while with the instrument you can better appreciate the significance of what he is saying. To me the section dealing with issues in shaping your nails is worth the price of the book by itself.

This is not a guitar method. If you don't know how to play it is not going to teach you. You need Frederick Noad or Aaron Shearer for that, but this book does a great job of filling in gaps and bringing clarity to things discussed in those guitar method books.

This is the mother lode of detailed technique

My classical guitar teacher told me about this book. I had many questions about the exact details of very minute technical issues,eg angle of the nails on the strings, the shaping of the nails, arm position, wrist position etc etc. This book explains "everything" in much more detail than, eg the Parkening or Woad books.
Other Classical guitar experts might not agree with everything in this book, but at least it looks at every technical issue.

Bishop Sheen is the man

This is a short book, but filled with many important things to ponder. There are seven chapters, each one devoted to one of the seven deadly sins. Bishop Sheen describes each of the sins in detail and shows how they destroy the soul of the one who partakes in them. He of course, gives advice on how we can overcome such vices.

One interesting thing that he does is start each chapter with a quote from Jesus on the cross (one of the seven last words of Christ). In doing so, he is claiming that each one of Christ's seven last words corresponded to something about each one of the seven deadly sins. It was quite interesting, and something that is worth contemplating.

Of course, Bishop Sheen is a lucid writer, and he is always an easy and enjoyable read.

An inspired classic on how to grow in virtue

This is a very positive book. As the editor's review states, it gives us the key to overcoming vice: growing in virtue. Which is more than simply turning away from vice. We have to turn away from our vices and turn toward something that is good: the virtue God wants for us, which will make us more like Him.

Anybody who sincerely wants to feel fulfilled and overcome with good the sins of lust, or anger, or any of the other 7 deadly sins, and give greater glory to God in their lives through the grace and power Jesus Christ offers us through His sacrifice, this is a great book!

The Weakest of Sheen's Books That I've Read, But Still Excellent

I'm a tremendous fan of Bishop Sheen's work, and I love the way he spoke and wrote. I knew I was going to like this book from the get-go. However, to be perfectly honest, out of all the books by Fulton J. Sheen that I've read, this is probably the weakest. By no means, however, does that make it bad.

He outlines, in this book, the various vices of Catholic tradition, and how each corresponds to the different "words from the cross;" an interesting subject of discussion, a good talking-point, and a subject on which to reflect. However, to be honest, I actually thought that his words on the subject of each vice had more to do with the words from the cross than they did with the vices, and I've already seen him treat of that subject (better, I think) in "the Life of Christ."

That's not enough for a star down, exactly, or even a half-star down, but I needed to take points off somewhere, because I found Bishop Sheen overgeneralizing on some of the topics he brings up in this book. For example, he says in his chapter on Gluttony, "reason demands that food and drink be taken for the necessities and conveniences of nature." This, I think, is much too broad a statement, and it can simply be misinterpreted much too easily.

I think Bishop Sheen assumes that if you're picking up this book, then that means you're already well-formed in your conscience, and are looking for a little bit of encouragement, but it's certainly possible for people to misinterpret and misunderstand what's said herein. In fact, I could probably write a whole book myself on how to correct such misinterpretations.

Still, for the most part, the book accomplishes its objective; not outlining specific theological truths or ethical doctrines, but drawing our attention back to our own sins and imperfections, to give us the chance to correct them. I personally prefer to dwell on the virtues, rather than the sins, but I can understand how some people would have an easier time focusing on their sins than on their virtues.

On the whole, I enjoyed this book, and was pleased with many of its insights, and many of its quotable sayings. For example "one thief was saved. Let no one despair. One theif was lost. Let no one presume."

I reccomend this book to the audience that Sheen probably intended; those who are already fairly strong in their faith, and just need a little push to remind them of how far they still have to go to achieve perfect holiness.

THE FAMED SPIRITUALIST MEDIUM RECOUNTS THE EARLIER HISTORY OF THE MOVEMENT

Emma Hardinge Britten (1823-1899) was a key figure in the Spiritualist Movement, as a writer, orator, and practitioner; she has also written Nineteenth Century Miracles Or Spirits and Their Work in Every Country of the Earth and Autobiography of Emma Hardinge Britten. (NOTE: Page numbers below refer to the 1970 565-page University Books edition.)

She wrote in the Introduction to this 1870 book, "we write for that posterity to whom our facts of veritable history will be of incalculable value, though to us, the living actors therein, they may be of little or no importance. Besides, the memory of these marvels rapidly passes away with the flight of time... Spiritual[ist] journals... have all... been too short-lived to become points of reference to posterity... Obviously, then, a duty rests on some one to collect the best and most reliable evidence that the circumstances of the case will afford, so as to conserve in a compendious form the records of either the commencement of a new era or an episode in human history as unparalleled in its preternatural marvels as it is rife with instruction, abundant in religious, social, and political influence, and prophetic of a mighty and momentous future for mental and spiritual science." (Pg. 16-17)

She states, "Admitting that the modern spiritual manifestations in America first began... at Rochester in 1848 [with the Fox sisters], it would still be impossible to separate the influence which the prevalence of the magnetic idea [of Franz Mesmer] exercised... Between the epochs ... is an interregnum... connecting both, belonging to both, yet standing alone, and unrivalled in the marvellous character of his occult endowments, and the irresistible nature of the influence he has exercised upon humanity. This personage is Andrew Jackson Davis..." (Pg. 23)

She comments, "Thus at Buffalo, New York, three gentlemen, whose position as leaders of science should have deterred them from the commital of their names to a published verdict of which subsequent events should have made them hearily ashamed, gravely rendered their testimony to the effect that the manifestations produced through the Fox sisters were all the result of the snapping of their knee and ankle joints!" (Pg. 92; the text of this document is given on pgs. 153-154)

She observes, "it can be no matter of surprise that persons who profess the broadest license on the marriage question should have accepted the demonstrations of spirit communion as well as those who believed in the strictest views of the conjugal relation, or even advocated the asceticism of celibacy. Still the mere fact that certain individuals professed 'free love' doctrines became convinced of the truth of spirit communion was quite sufficient, when all other causes of offense failed, to give a handle for antagonism to fasten the obnoxious and totally irrelevant opinion upon the entire body of Spiritualists... and labor to make the two words appear to be of synonymous meaning." (Pg. 233)

She admits, "When it is remembered that Spiritualism numbers one-fourth at least of the population of the United States in its ranks, it can be no matter of surprise to find many persons associated with it, whose character and actions are calculated to inflict far more damage on the cause than the most bitter antagonism or secular opposition. Amongst these, none have been so active for mischief as 'spiritual mountebanks' and dishonest mediums." (Pg. 239) Later, she adds, "Ninety-nine spurious counterfeits can never destroy the value of one precious piece, fresh from the treasury of immortality; and that these have been vouchsafed to buy souls from the power of darkness, infidelity, and superstition, we know, and testify of in these startling and wonderful spiritual phenomena." (Pg. 345)

For anyone interested in the history of the Spiritualist movement, this book is absolutely "must reading."

Tango is my changing, resourceful source of identity. And because I am where I am—outside—tango hurts and comforts me: ‘Tango is a sad thought that can be danced.’”Savigliano employs the tools of ethnography, history, body-movement analysis, and political economy. This book is basically unreadable. I tried several times to wade through it and eventually gave up. I am sure there are some valuable points here but they are under deep layers of academic self indulgence. Tango dancers beware! This book is more about political theory than the dance.

History of Tango Including Social and Emotional Aspects

Histories of the Argentine tango are often polemical. Questions of propriety, national identity and social position have colored and distorted the perceptions of both authors and readers. In this tradition, Marta E. Savigliano, Assistant Professor of dance history at the University of California, Riverside, explores the history of the Argentine Tango as a dance form using sex/gender, wealth/class and color/race categories.

As a woman, a feminist and a dancer of tango, Savigliano is willing to investigate aspects of the tango that both attract and disturb many people.
What is different and most provocative in Savigliano's history of the tango is her exploration of the sex-gender dynamics. Her description of tango includes its emotional context:

"As a powerful representation of male/female courtship, stressing the
tension involved in the process of seduction, the tango performance has
gone through several successive adjustments as it has been adopted and
legitimized by the upper classes and by Western hegemonic cultures."

Savigliano's legitimization road introduces us to upper-crust Argentine lads slumming in the brothels of Buenos Aires, takes us through left-bank Paris of the 1910s, explains romantic reinterpretations of tango as it became THE dance of the Argentine middle class by the 1940s. We even visit more recent Japanese tango revivals.

Is the tango a display of unequal male-female power relationships? Who seduces whom?

Savigliano speaks as someone who knows well the tango, notably the heart and soul and the passion-tension in the dance. She views the tango woman not as a victim, but as a co-conspirator. The follower may not lead the tango, but she often knows more about what's happening than the leader:

"Translated into tango choreographic terms, [Tango] lyrics suggest that
milonguitas could provoke the dance (call the attention of their target
through their glances, figure, and dancing abilities) and tempt the
class/race status quo into motion, but they would never lead or "mark"
(marcar) in the moment at which the special steps were performed.

So Savigliano's answer is that the follower provokes and teases, and maybe
controls the leader's heart and intentions, even while the leader is
choreographing the dance, in spite of the fact that the economic power relationship may be quite unequal.

There are not many English language histories of the tango, so Savigliano's effort is a welcome contribution. On the whole, the writing style is accessible for an intelligent reader, although sometimes the academic approach is over-stressed and other times it is too artistic or impressionable.

The strength of this book is that human emotions and the male-female dynamic of tango have been brought into its historical analysis. The tango dance is quite unusual in this regard because without the experience of dancing tango an armchair historian simply persuing primary-source material would miss some of the most important elements no matter how deep the investigation.

In response to the reviewer below - why a non-academic would bother to try and read a book containing the phrase "political economy of passion" in its title is beyond me. What did s/he think it would be like?

This is one of those books that is absolutely incredible for those with the formation to read it, and probably completely meaningless to those without: those who don't have a graduate education ought to be scared off by the title, as intended.
