But the lawyer who sprang Carlito from prison, turns out to be up to his neck in it with the mafia and wants to call in a favour. And, as Carlito says, "a failure can kill faster than a bullet." This is fast moving American crime writing at its very best that lifts the Iid on Spanish Harlem as no other book does. Edwin Torres was born and raised in the district and as he says "a lot of the friends I grew up with are in jail now. I put some of them there." For Torres is now a criminal court judge in New York City.

I was not disapointed.

The only drawback I could find for this book was the big size of the edition, since it wasn't as convenient to carry around as it would be on a separate book for each part.

This novel is so well written that even a European reader like myself does not get intimitated by the New York slang. The plot is captivating and the heroes alive.

Those who have seen the movie can only admire the way the script has respected the spirit of the book. And those who haven't will still feel as though the images come alive on every sentence.

carlito's way and after hours two great books by edwin torres if you like organized crime mixed with funny characters this is the book for you. in the books we get to see a different carlito brigante than the one in movie a more cold blooded carlito brigante this book is filled with crime,passion,fun and death this one has it all if you are into the movie you'll like the book better trust me

Malala Yousafzai, a young proponent of girls' education, came to the world's attention after being shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012. The corresponding story of Iqbal Masih, a young anti-child labor activist from 20 years earlier, is less well known—and has much less of a happy ending: the boy was shot and killed at age 12. Like Winter's earlier works, simple sentences and repetition ("Still Malala speaks out") give the story an accessible rhythm, and illustrations consisting of bold colors and shapes, each framed by a colorful geometric pattern, indicate moods ranging from the light pink of mourning to the bold orange and purple of defiance. The two stories are linked by a shared, wordless center spread featuring a kite motif from Masih's story. (The attentive viewer may note the symbolism in the choice to show Iqbal, in muted gray, as having let go of his kite, while Yousafzai, in full color, holds hers tightly.) Wonderful Teaching Tool

We are using this book in my second grade class to teach about culture, compare/contrast, and opinion writing. The text is highly engaging, and the students easily made connections to both Malala and Iqbal. This quickly became a classroom favorite, and several students have reread it on their own.

I doubt that there's a better supplemental DE book out there

I used this book for an introductory differential equations course. With the help of this book, I was completely prepared for everything the professor threw at us and more.

Some of the problems are simple and should help to reinforce the basic concepts learned from another book. Learn the fundamentals from some other book (or even a professor), and refine your thought processes using this one. There are some basic explanations of concepts and problem types, but most of the space is devoted to problems and solutions, as you may have guessed. If I had trouble with a problem from another book, I could almost always find a similar one in the REA book. A few problems are extremely difficult or involved, but the book leads you through every step of every problem. I was blown away by the depth of a few problems, but following the reasoning in this book really helped me to develop a better "feel" for the subject.

Yes, the font looks like something from your mother's typewriter, but the book is very sensibly organized into a (huge) number of chapters that should more than cover any intro-level DE course. My test reviews consisted of working problems from this book and doing little else, and I've never felt more confident going into exams.

If you're willing to put in the time, this book is probably one of the best course-related resources you could ever spend your money on. It would also be a good reference for someone who occasionally wants help with troublesome problem types.

If you are studying DEs, get this book! It beats the usual text books that only contain solutions to selected problems, namely the ones that the professor does not assign or examine you on. This book is comprehensive and contains stratagies for attacking the various problems you will encounter in undergraduate DE courses. It even contains problems and solutions to Partial Differential Equations, Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems, not just ODEs!

Do I know Microsoft Office?... I Excel at it!

This is a great book for those getting started with PowerPivot. I am a long time Excel user, and am pretty good with Excel Formulas, following along with the exercises in this book it really helped me bridge my knowledge from Excel Formulas over the DAX. This book provides great visuals, explanations, and the exercises concrete what you are learning. The sample database along with the exercises created a resource I will use going forward when I am solving real problems/writing formulas for my PowerPivot reports for work. Excellent resource, and well worth the money!

This book is nothing short of excellent -- I feel very lucky to have come across it. I have read many DAX books, all of which have great aspects, but Matt's combination of simplicity and depth, the exercises and the repetition of key concepts has boosted my understanding by a wide margin. For anyone serious about learning DAX, and particularly for business users/ Excel power users who don't have a programming background, this is a must-have in your DAX library. (If you get it, do the exercises, no matter how simple they may seem. they are invaluable.)

It feels like this book was a labor of love, and all of us learners out there are grateful.

Excellent book to actually LEARN how to write DAX!

This is the book to start with if you are beginning your DAX writing journey. In my opinion, Matt's approach to helping people learn how to write DAX is superior to any of the other DAX books I have read. He introduces a topic/concept in small pieces, explains it, then immediately provides practice exercises to reinforce the material. This is the BEST way to learn: by attempting to write the DAX code, and seeing if you understood it by looking at the results. The pace is just right, so the amount of material you need to conquer is attainable.

Matt also explained some topics in a way that I had not seen previously, but found eye-opening. It filled in several gaps in my understanding, and answered lingering questions I had. I think he just "gets it" when it comes to teaching, and explains things in a way that is exactly what I was looking for. His chapter on the FILTER function was exceptional, and it reads like he is giving you a personal tutoring session.

If you are a beginner, this book is for you. Even if you have read other DAX books, and have some experience writing DAX, I want to encourage you to get this book. It will help crystallize the material you already know, and give you some new insights into what is going on with DAX. It certainly did for me.

I also want to encourage the author, Matt Allington, to consider writing another book on DAX. He is a superb teacher, and hit a grand slam on this one!

Combines history with authentic ethnic recipes

I bought this cookbook several years ago and am going to buy a couple more for family gifts.

The major ethnic groups which came to Butte MT are all represented. For those who don't know, until the 1920's, Butte was as large and prestigious a city as Denver, CO. So there are a lot of different nationalities represented in the book, along with brief snippets of newspaper articles, biographical information on some of the recipe sources, etc.

The thing I love about this cookbook is that while most of the recipes have been modernized, these really ARE the recipes which these immigrants brought from their homelands. Some are simple and easy to make, and many use ingredients which are low-cost and are (or were) easy to find. But others are recipes which will take an entire day (or more) to make! I especially want to try the chicken ravioli recipe in the Italian section, but don't have time to do so right now.

This book is a great gift for someone of Butte heritage (if they don't already own it) -- it's a great book for people who enjoy history as well as cooking. And I think it's a great book for cooks who want to explore the original, old-fashioned recipes of the past.

In addition, as a parent of a child with an egg allergy, there are quite a few recipes, even for desserts, which omit eggs - so this book is a boon in that respect as well!

I have a weakness for cookbooks, and own many. This is one of my very favorite cookbooks, if not my favorite.

Good food!

Great old fashioned recipes for the foods you remember as a kid. Lots of good filling, sustaining, one pot meals that actually taste great and leave you satisfied. This was to replace the one worn out one I used for years. Chicken Azteca (spanish rice with chicken) or Italian Hunters Chicken (chicken cacciatore) are only two of the best of hundreds of great meals.

This is the first book to present a synthesis of rational choice theory and sociological perspectives for the analysis of social institutions.

The origin of social institutions is an old concern in social theory. Currently it has re-emerged as one of the most intensely debated issues in social science. Among economists and rational choice theorists, there is growing awareness that most, if not all, of the social outcomes that are of interest to explain are at least partly a function of institutional constraints. Yet the role of institutions is negligible both in general equilibrium theory and in most neoclassical economic models. There is a burgeoning substantive interest in institutions ranging from social movements, to formal organizations, to states, and even international regimes.

Rational choice theorists have made great strides in elucidating the effects of institutions on a variety of social outcomes, but they have paid insufficient attention to the social dynamics that lead to the emergence of these institutions. Typically, these institutions have been assumed to be a given, rather than considered as outcomes requiring explanation in their own right. Sociological theorists, in contrast, have long appreciated the role of social structural constraints in the determination of outcomes but have neglected the role of individual agents.

Michael Hechter is professor emeritus in the department of Sociology at the University of Washington. He is the author of numerous books. He became an Elected Fellow to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004 and has been featured in Who's Who. He is also currently on editorial boards for a numerous amount of journals.

Karl-Dieter Opp is professor of sociology at Univesitat Leipzig. He has been a Fellow of the European Academy of Sociology since 1999 and has been member of the Council and Treasurer since 2000. He is also current on the advisory board for the magazine Mind and Society.

Reinhard Wippler is professor of theoretical sociology at the University of Utrecht and scientific director of the Interuniversity Center for Sociological Theory and Methodology.

He is currently serving as visiting professor at the University of Washington, and before that was a Fellow of New College at Oxford University. I wrote this sister book/sequel to The Millionth Circle: How to Change Ourselves and The World for heart-centered activists who are motivated to act by compassionate action, a sense of sisterhood, or fierce mother bear protectiveness which is a combination of love and outrage. I wrote it when efforts for a 5th World Conference on Women (5WCW) encountered obstacles and resistance even after the UN Secretary General and President of the General Assembly issued a joint statement in strong support on International Women's Day, 2012. and I turned to writing as an expression of my activism. The last UN women's conference was in Beijing in 1995 --before widespread use of the internet, way before the millennial generation entered adulthood.�

I wrote it to inspire you to act out of consciousness and choice to step up and take on what is meaningful, fun--even when difficult, and motivated by love, which only you can know to be true. Activism is then an individuation step and soul work. I wrote it so more circles with a sacred center would form and groups in existence might transform into circles. I wrote it with the hope and intention that it would be in print when the UN Commission on the Status of Women met the first two weeks of March 2013 and that I could gift copies of the book away to NGO delegates and UN people. This became possible because of exceptional support from my publisher (Conari). Synchronicity, serendipity and grace helped all along the way.

The first copies of Moving Toward the Millionth Circle arrived on January 21,Inauguration (and MLK) Day! �It was such a delight to hold the little book. In this author-mother's eyes: �she is gorgeous1 My hope is that she will go into the world and be taken to heart.

I wish now that I had included how an idea spreads geometrically with the example of he 3 to the 19th power (it is in the Preface to the paperback of Urgent Message From Mother: Gather the Women, Save the World.)� If three women speak of something each believes is true to 3 others, and they in turn speak to 3 others, in 19 steps the message will reach 1,162,261,487. When a critical number of people change beliefs in what is possible, then perceptions and actions follow.� This Inauguration Day was a reminder.� Remember history? Slavery and denying women the right to vote was once what was. These expressions of patriarchy were transformed. Compassion and courage grow in a circle of equals with a spiritual center--as members of AA know. In the consciousness-raising groups that became the Women's Movement in the 1970s, equality was a sacred mission.

Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D., is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst, and an internationally known author and speaker. She is the author of The Tao of Psychology, Goddesses in Everywoman, Gods in Everyman, Ring of Power, Crossing to Avalon, Close to the Bone, The Millionth Circle, Goddesses in Older Women, Crones Don't Whine, Urgent Message from Mother, and Like a Tree with over eighty foreign translations. Women moving forward on their own behalf

It's apparent that women need to mobilize on their own behalf. Much has been accomplished in the last decades, but much more needs to be accomplished on behalf of women and their rights as full global citizens. Dr. Bolen has laid out a plan that encourages women to work together in heart centered activism. Individuals have limited influence but as women and men join together in a common purpose, tides can turn. This book will inspire and instruct how to do that. It encourages the powerful format of heart centered circles which allows women to follow their natural inclination of tending and befriending one another in circle with love in the center. Joseph Campbell spoke about the rising myth of our time: He suggested one cannot predict the upcoming invisible moving force that is pushing society, but he was convinced it will have something to do with the rising of the feminine. Gathering together in a non-hierarchical format makes that movement visible and encourages women and men to join together and joyously take on the assignment of their soul's longing. I highly recommend this book. It is wonderfully concise but no less profound.

Our Assignment

This is a motivational book which calls us out in our responsibility to act, by continuing to seed and nourish the circle movement. When I was introduced to circle 18 years ago, it was not always easy to wrap myself around the concept as an everyday practice. And now, 4 circles strong, I know how transforming circle can be. This book is fuel on the fire, with a timely focus of bringing women together from all walks of life, reminding us of the power of circle. Read it and you will be motivated to know circle deep in your heart. Ronita Johnson

Expensive disappointment!

Having read many of Dr. Bolen's books, I was SO excited to get my hands on this one. Darn! It reads like random pages out of her journals, alternating with first drafts of poetry -- double spaced to make the too-short book seem worth the $20!?! Yes, this little book has its insights and highlights but overall presents nothing new at all. For a first time reader and a neophyte to circle work, this may be a good introduction to get you up to speed on all the good work Jean, and women, have done. For this seasoned circle tender, it was a big disappointment with no new direction. Frankly, Jean's free newsletters and website contain far more valuable resources and inspiration! Our time is now and we need a louder call to action! Start a circle! (but you won't know how to with this book)

I'm a 26 year old guy that struggled with women for a majority of my life. After reading Social Savant, I had questions answered that I didn't even know I wanted to ask. The author clearly lays out how women think and then gives his personal experiences to hammer the concepts home. I highly recommend this book for people trying to be more confident and successful with women
