Difficult to follow the author's thought process.

I did not enjoy this book. It was hard to follow, the 'comic strips' rarely made sense, and the text is smaller then the standard. I do have to note, however, that the material it was presenting was good. My profession had a sort of 'cheat sheet' for this book- a packet produced by the author to be more reader friendly. In my opinion, if you have to make a supplement packet to make your textbook readable, then you should review the format of the textbook.

Romping space opera?

Yeah, I'd say so. I just finished Galaxy of Heroes II and enjoyed it as much as I did Heroes I. This was good old fashioned space fiction, not a whole lot of time spent explaining how this drive or that worked, all of it was spent building the characters, and walking us thru their worlds. The fast paced action, personal dramas and story continuity - had me eager to get done with my day so I could resume my sci fi escapism each evening with War Heroes.
I would have enjoyed a little more intrigue, the secondary characters could've had a more active role after they were created, but those are my only complaints.
This author makes me appreciate Amazon's Indie Books! $2.99? Much too inexpensive, but puts the big publishers' $12.99 ebooks in their place.
Gus Flory - a name on my list of Amazon Independents to watch for future volumes of this or other series.

Humanity's days may be numbered but Capt. Spade says he's just not the dying type

Gus Flory's second outing in the Galaxy of Heroes saga increases the adrenaline somewhat. It's not that his first novel, which I decided to reread since it had been three years, dragged. Quite the opposite. But "War Heroes" connects back with our irreverent Capt. Jace Spade and Mina Casey when the collective fate of mankind looks even worse. The premise is this: a third-tier race devastated earth hundreds of years past. Only the outliers on Mars and Saturn's moons put up much of a fight. After that, humanity became the nomads of the stars, settling here and there and trying to gain a foothold in an increasingly unstable galaxy. Two races, the Craaldans and the Diocons, want to annihilate each other and anything else that stands in their way. Humans seemingly irritate both, and there are very few of them remaining. Spade isn't really the hero type. His former ex, Casey, falls for him again after he helps assemble a ragtag group of refugees to make a run for empty space. Spade feels the only alternative to keep at least some human DNA intact is to flee to the far corners of space. He's right. Unfortunately, his refugees don't make it very far. They're attacked by the Craaldans at world the war-like aliens had bombarded and left for dead. A small colony of survivors lets them into their midst, but the harsh conditions of the planet and minimal resources don't give them much hope of survival. Zeth, the Craaldan leading the kill team, wants them all dead so he can return to fighting the Diocons. And nobody likes Spade. He's on the hit lists for both the Craaldans and the Diocons after he uncovered the duplicity of the small rat-like bipeds, the Noctish. But his actions resulted in huge losses for both aggressors. Out of nowhere, a new ally comes to the aid of the refugees and planet dwelling humans. His name is Capt. Jack Winner, and he's got a fast ship and amazing ordnance and ammunition, way better stuff than they previously could dig up. And he says he wants to fight. Spade's outvoted. Nobody wants to ship out on a thousand-year voyage through empty space. They want to fight. This Winner guy has them convinced. The story plays out like a bit of an old western with Flory's trademark high-octane action sequences. He infuses the story with strong female characters, who appear to carry the emotional depth in the story line. The guys are a little gung ho and easy to predict. But, then again, that's pretty much how it is. Genie, the drop-dead gorgeous cyborg, has her independence and still decided to live with Sgt. Joe Grimes. She makes sure they all survive, somehow. Casey represents the despair of the human race. The Craaldens are unstoppable and she wonders whether living is even worthwhile with so many losses, so many deaths. Better than the first book and I'm expecting big things from No. 3 due in July

The fun keeps coming...

I don't understand why anyone would think that the second book didn't live up to the first. I thought it was great. My review of the first book below remains true for Galaxy of Heroes II: War Heroes.

I was very happy to find the Galaxy of Heroes books by Gus Flory. The story pulled me in from the very start and kept my interest. The author provided just enough background to develop and draw you in to the characters without overcomplicating, which is important to me. The story line had a good balance of twists, turns, action and humor to make it a very fun read.

If you are looking for a fun space adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously you'll love these. I will definitely purchase future adventures in this Galaxy of Heroes.

About the Author
Alan Loy McGinnis (19332005) was a best-selling author, family therapist, business consultant, and popular speaker. After a twenty year career as a minister, he became a counselor and co-founded the Valley Counseling Center in Glendale, CA. In the 1970s, he began researching friendship and authored The Friendship Factor, published by Augsburg Fortress in 1979 and revised in 2004. A popular speaker, he also authored more than fifty articles and several more books, including Bringing Out the Best in People, Confidence, and The Balanced Life, all published by Augsburg Fortress

This book helped change my life...

I know you've heard that phrase before, I know I have. And yet, I did not experience this until after having read this book. I didn't even think I had a problem with confidence, any more than the next person, that is, until I started reading it. McGinnis touches on so many points and issues that many of us have, but do not realize are related to how we view ourselves. He also points out where a lot of our "flaws" are connected to our past AND how we can help change that. "Confidence" teaches you to accept yourself and love yourself. It is a book that approaches this topic from a spiritual and religious perspective (but this not overdone). Reading this book helped me to change my view of myself as well as to move forward from the past and address the emotional issues that were hindering me. I give it 5 stars and I think everyone should read it...I know that I am glad that I did.

Learn to understand your self will take you futher in life

This book is quite challenging for the everyday person. You will learn your weaknesses that are probably really destroying your life. As you begin to read you start to understand what is really happening. This book gets you to understand that self-confidence is the building block of your life and it starts early in life as a newborn. You will learn to focus on your strong points and not your weaknesses. How you view your self as a person and that god creates us all. We all endowed in us remarkable capacities to reach for the maximum. You will learn that comparison causes us to be obsessed with our limitations. So reading this book would change anybody's thought and beliefs of themselves and to be your self.

Advocates Healthy Self-Esteem

Dr. McGinnis writes, "One of the strangest things we observe in therapy is that people who doubt themselves often cannot accept compliments." He prefaces this observation with a call for balance, saying this book is not designed to present an exaggerated look at self-esteem. The other extreme to be avoided is low self-esteem and false modesty. The approach taught in the Bible is to "love your neighbor as you love yourself." That is the balance he advocates.
I love writers who reinforce something I'm already doing. Such is the case with this author who tells his readers to keep a journal. There's other solid advice given such as spend time in solitude, praying and seeking God's Wisdom. We're reminded that we are always in a state of flux and will be as long as we live.
In developing this balanced approach to life even further, he quotes Karl Menninger in saying that to be well-adjusted a healthy person needs a combination of play, love, and work. Yes, work is part of the mix. Self-esteem comes from a sense of purpose. Discovering who God designed you to be is part of life's joyous adventure. He notes, "God's blueprint for us is often written in our natures."
The power of imaging is explained in this book. Like me, he visualized himself becoming a doctor before he finished earning the degree. He describes how faith is an integral part of this imagination process.
Dr. McGinnis successfully brings his discussion to a logical conclusion by talking about the connection between love of self, love of others and love of God. Those, of course, are what sum up the commandments. Jesus told us that. This book adds some substance to that ongoing exploration. Reading it and applying its teachings will enhance your life's quality.

I'm currently reading this book for a course and I would not recommend using this book. It's an easy read the author explains something well about child development but the cultural asspect is terrible so many Sterotypes , I would hate for an educator who is new to the field to get ahold of this text and take everything he is saying for face value, they would be very Mis informed. I'm on my last chapter and I was happy I was often offended reading this book

The book arrived in a timely manner. I felt the condition of the book was not as good as expected. There were 3 sticky notes left sticking out on the pages and the front cover was tattered and bent back at the top. Otherwise, there were no markings on the book and it was easy to read.

About the Author
Nicole Daedone is the founder of the OneTaste retreat centers located in San Francisco and New York. She helped develop the OneTaste curriculum and train faculty based on her innovative approaches to relationships, healing and mindful sexuality. Mentored by Dr. Dean Barnlund, an early collaborator of Alan Watts, she writes, teaches and lectures on the relationship between language and spirituality, body and mind. Her undergraduate and graduate work was in gender studies and semantics.

This practice was recommended to me by a mentor whom I trust. I read the book and it was a WOW! I wanted to experience it. My husband read the book and agreed to give it a try to see. I was concerned about "What's in it for him?" Well apparently this is the booster rocked for personal growth and evolution. I never knew or appreciated the mystery and power of this space between my legs, hidden and rarely consulted. I'm learning how much beauty and power I have as a woman and that I'm the Source of this for my man. Pretty transformative.
We have taken the "How to Om" class and are enrolled to take the Relationship by Design course. Realized we have not deliberately Designed our relationship but have just responded as best we can as the situations of life arose. To be consciously co creating with a blueprint that satisfies both of us - another WOW!!! The Power of Orgasm is transforming Us, more Intimacy, More Connection, More Love!
