About the Author

David Myers received his psychology Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has spent his career at Hope College, Michigan, where he has taught dozens of introductory psychology sections. Hope College students have invited him to be their commencement speaker and voted him "outstanding professor."

His research and writings have been recognized by the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize, by a 2010 Honored Scientist award from the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences, by a 2010 Award for Service on Behalf of Personality and Social Psychology, by a 2013 Presidential Citation from APA Division 2, and by three dozen honorary doctorates.

With support from National Science Foundation grants, Myers' scientific articles have appeared in three dozen scientific periodicals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Science, and the American Psychologist. In addition to his scholarly writing and his textbooks for introductory and social psychology, he also digests psychological science for the general public. His writings have appeared in four dozen magazines, from Today's Education to Scientific American. He also has authored five general audience books, including The Pursuit of Happiness and Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.

David Myers has chaired his city's Human Relations Commission, helped found a thriving assistance center for families in poverty, and spoken to hundreds of college and community groups. Drawing on his experience, he also has written articles and a book (A Quiet World) about hearing loss, and he is advocating a transformation in American assistive listening technology (see www.hearingloop.org). For his leadership, he received an American Academy of Audiology Presidential Award in 2011, and the Hearing Loss Association of America Walter T. Ridder Award in 2012.

He bikes to work year-round and plays daily pick-up basketball. David and Carol Myers have raised two sons and a daughter, and have one granddaughter to whom he dedicates the Third Edition of Psychology in Everyday Life.

C. Nathan DeWall is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Social Psychology Lab at the University of Kentucky. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Olaf College, a Master’s Degree in Social Science from the University of Chicago, and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Florida State University. DeWall received the 2011 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award, which recognizes excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. In 2011, the Association for Psychological Science identified DeWall as a “Rising Star” for “making significant contributions to the field of psychological science.”�DeWall conducts research on close relationships, self-control, and aggression. With funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, he has published over 120 scientific articles and chapters. DeWall’s research awards include the SAGE Young Scholars award from the Foundation for Personality and Social Psychology, the Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Research on Aggression, and the Early Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity. His research has been covered by numerous media outlets, including Good Morning America, Newsweek, Atlantic Monthly, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Harvard Business Review, and National Public Radio. DeWall blogs for Psychology Today. He has lectured nationally and internationally, including in Hong Kong, China, the Netherlands, England, Greece, Hungary, and Australia.�Nathan is happily married to Alice DeWall. He enjoys playing with his two golden retrievers, Finnegan and Atticus. Charles William Daniel (1871-1955) was a maverick free-thinker whose tiny publishing house had august links with many of the most influential thinkers and movements of the 20th century. To wit, copies of Daniel's books could be found in the library at Ghandi's ashram. This spirit lived on after his death, and the company maintained its niche by publishing definitive texts on a variety of spiritual and esoteric subjects. Many of these titles, notably those on Aromatherapy and Bach Flower remedies, have become standard works on the subject. When the C.W. Daniel list went looking for a new home, the Vermilion and Rider imprints were the natural place for this wonderful collection of authors.

About the Author
Born in the north of England, the author of The Boy Who Saw True chose to remain anonymous and would only allow his diary to appear several years after his death, with the stipulation that the original spellings were to remain and some of the names be changed. His editor Cyril Scott enjoyed a two-fold career as a musical composer and a writer on the occult and other related matters.

My true story

I know this sounds silly: my husband is a school bus driver and was driving kids who go to special schools. Most were obnoxious, in constant motion and incapable of listening. One little boy like to sit up front and talk and although we can't remember the exact subject now, it had to do with reading others thoughts which he seemed to do, and remembering past lives amongst other things. If he had a bad day at school, he never gave anyone grief on the bus, he just parked himself on the bottom step and made my husband and the attendant lift him onto the bus. Other than that he seemed to be no trouble.
I had just read this book, and suggested my husband loan it to the boy. After a number of weeks of my suggestion, he told the boy 'this is a book about a boy who reminds me of you, I thought you'd like to read about him.' So the boy took it without saying anything. Weeks past, and one day when they arrived at the boy's stop, the father of the child was waiting. He talked to my husband and mentioned the book (at first my husband was afraid the family was fundamentalist christians or something). The dad said the boy read the book 7 times and asked himself to read it too. And he finally understood his son. He finished by saying: 'You were listening to my son... and I should have been.'
After that, the boy seemed more calm at school and became a great help on the bus, corraling the littlest kids together and helping to keep an eye on them. And a few weeks later, he was back in the regular school.
I believe there are people like the boy in this book, just because I don't have this gift doesn't mean I have to deny its existence. (I also don't embrace everything without at least a grain of salt. ;-))

For anyone interested in auras, spirits, and spirituality.

I was sorry when the book ended. This is the diary of a young boy born in victorian England with the ability to see and hear spirits. His family life in the victorian era is interesting to say the least, while the insights provided by conversations with spirits, teachers, and people who have "passed over" are fascinating and thought provoking. This is a book I plan to give to my friends who are following a spiritual path. It is easy to read and humorous as well. Most of the origional mispellings (from the diary) remain intact in this published edition, delightfully reminding us of the youthful innocence of the author.

Mark Harrison is a good teacher

I have three of Mark Harrison's intro books (blues, jazz, country) -- they are all good. In the jazz book, I especially consider his method of teaching the circle of fifths/fourths and the 2-5-1 chord progression as very understandable and helpful. I have numerous other books on learning jazz piano; Mark Harrison's is superior to most. Now I am not a professional pianist -- just learning it because it is such fun and so fulfilling a recreation.

I’ve been playing piano for 3 years now. This book is at a level that it is very doable. The exercises help develop an understanding of chords and melody treatment in all the musical keys. The companion CD is helpful. I’m having fun going learning about JAZZ. Mk

Effective, easy use and really complete.

It has all you need to start thinking like a Jazz player. The exercises are presented in "step by step form" so you won't jump from super easy to impossible at any point. Of course, it's an INTRO book, so remember it's aimed to give you the basics about chord voicings (and how to apply basic but effective rhythms to them) and a little bit of Lead Sheet reading so you can star playing tunes of the Real Book on your own.
I've already bought Beginning Rock Keyboard and let me tell you it's as good as this one. I cannot tell if the whole serie of these books is as great as the two Harrison's I've bought or is something exclusive of this instructor in particular. I'm planning to keep adding this books to my collection so I will find out at some point.

Mary Brave Bird grew up fatherless in a one-room cabin, without running water or electricity, on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Mary Brave Bird gave birth to a son during the 71-day siege of Wounded Knee in 1973, which ended with a bloody assault by U.S. marshalls and police. Seventeen years old at the time, she married fellow activist Leonard Crow Dog, medicine man and spiritual leader of the American Indian Movement (AIM). Written with Erdoes ( Lame Deer ; Seeker of Visions ), her searing autobiography is courageous, impassioned, poetic and inspirational. Her girlhood, a vicious circle of drinking and fighting, was marked by poverty, racism and a rape at 14. She ran away from a coldly impersonal boarding school run by nuns where, she reports, Indian students were beaten to induce them to give up native customs and speech. The authors write of AIM's infiltration by FBI agents, of Mary Crow Dog helping her husband endure prison, of Indian males' macho attitudes. Born in 1955 and raised in poverty on the Rosebud Reservation, Mary Crow Dog escaped an oppressive Catholic boarding school but fell into a marginal life of urban shoplifting and barhopping. A 1971 encounter with AIM (the American Indian Movement), participation in the 1972 Trail of Broken Treaties march on Washington, and giving birth to her first child while under fire at the 1973 siege of Wounded Knee radicalized her. Anglo-Indian confrontations are characterized by extreme prejudice and violence, but some whites (the Erdoes family, William Kunstler, Marlon Brando, and others) offer genuine support. Caustic humor sparks the matter-of-fact narrative. Wife of a Sioux medicine man, Mary Crow Dog exemplifies the contemporary movement back to Native land, religion, and values. Highly recommended for American history, Native American, and women's history collections.

Tells It Like It Was

I really dig what the author is saying. She tells it like it was--how she and others were treated by those implementing U.S. government policy (abominably) as well as incidents like her and her friends "liberating" items from stores.

Man's inhumanity to man always slays me. Though it's been happening from the beginning of time, I always find it incredible.

I found the first half of the book more interesting than the second half. The paragraphs eventually became too long for me and not as interesting. It felt more like an obligatory detailing of the facts than an impassioned narrative of the experiences of AIM, etc.

Though I found myself skimming portions of the second half, I still recommend this book.

Worth Reading

A very good story, and an important one to read. It does not flow well, and jumps around in timelines, however, so at times it was difficult to follow. The story is that of the life of a woman born into very difficult circumstances, as a "half-breed" Lakota. Her family lives in abject poverty on a reservation, and even when she is sent to be educated in a Catholic school, she is punished for her heritage. She grows to embrace her tribal customs and rituals, and joins in the movement to better the lives of the American Indians, risking her life to make a difference. It was worth the effort to read.

Learned a lot

I'm embarrassed to admit that my knowledge of Native American/American Indian history is poor. Like slavery, the Holocaust, the Trail of Tears and other abominations, I find them too depressing and heart wrenching. I've read enough to know that these are shameful horrors (like the terrors inflicted on victims of ISIS/DAESH today) of man's inhumanity to man.

Lakota Woman is written in a simple style that makes the book more readable and credible. I've read about the depressive conditions on the "res" and the influence of alcohol and other societal issues of native clans (including Alaska) and am amazed that this still goes on. Also the raids and other mistreatment continue.

Perhaps books like this one will help to educate the rest of us. I've ordered and look forward to reading her other book: Ohitika Woman.

That's all I can say for this book.

I am a parent who has been going through a number of books so that when my sons are of age, I can have a reading list of suitable books for them whose content I am comfortable with. (Books written for adolescents have way too much anguish and sex in them for my [Orthodox Jewish] taste.)

This is one of those books that passes that test. (And I have to say that I was reluctant to give Nancy Farmer a second chance after her AWFUL, babbling book A Girl Named Disaster)

Great book. There was always a twist around the corner, and the storyline was so great, I ended up reading the second book, which, I loved. There is a wide variety of characters, each with their own unique personalities. Characters such as Tam Lin, Celia, and Mar�a influence the protqgonist by being caring, thoughtful, and teaching him some sort of important lesson, which is usually given as a hint to what he must do toward the end of the book, which is escape. The story is about how Matt, the clone of a Mexican Drug Lord, is mistreated in the secluded country of Opium, which the Drug Lord owns. The whole country is immune to the horrors of the outside world, holding many extinct species, and pratically taking place in the past due to the Drug Lord's nostalgia. As Matt grows older, he makes new friends, and enemies, and eventually the true purpose of his existence is revealed. This leads to his escape. Overall I thought it was a great book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes anything, because whatever it is, it's on here.

Others have written mostly what I would have said about how the plot is and the quality of the writing so I really can only add that I enjoyed this book and can highly recommend it, no matter your age.
