I was searching for an introduction to this field, and hesitated after reading the two stars review. I found the book at a university bookstore and browsed through it. It is exactly what I was looking for.
A simple yet comprehensive introduction to the field, clear examples, sample code, and some solutions to exercises that helped me go through the chapters.

I like to learn by reading, and searched for an introduction to computer vision and image processing with PDE as tools (I took a classical course that did not cover these aspects). This book was great for the task. It does not pretend to push you into pure theoretical domains as most of the related books seem to enjoy doing, yet it keeps you on the edge when it deals with geometry of moving curves and the interesting model of color image as a surface. If you like geometry like me, you would like the book.

I already experimented with and used some of the tools I picked up from this book. I think it's a great asset to anyone who would like a direct access to a set of geometric tools for manipulating images.
I hesitated weather to give it only 4 stars as the last chapter breaks the flow. However, I saw the author made a whole new book out of it so I kept it 5. Worth the buck.

Numerical Geometry of Images

If there's one topic this books is not about, it's the numerical geometry of images
despite its title.

This book should have been titled "Introduction to Geometry of Curves on Surfaces."

The closest the author gets to anything resembling the study of the numerical
geometry of images is the Taylor series expansion of derivatives taught in most
undergraduate calculus courses - and two simple MATLAB program of questionable
value at the end the book.

There are a handful of simple algorithms in the chapter 7 but they only address
fast marching methods applied to two silly boundary value problems. The author
completely ignores the corresponding initial value problem.

I'm giving it 2 stars since the title of the book was completely misleading.
And after reading it, I was left wondering how would someone apply the information
presented in this book to a simple 2 dimensional image since there are absolutely
no examples of any practical value.

Factual report on USA/Mexican border crossings

This book was written in the late '70's and is still true today. Only the numbers of illegal crossings have changed and they were high then; astronomical today. The book recalls an experiement that lasted just over a year.

The San Diego Police Department sent specially trained undercover police officers into the canyons of the border to intercept drug gangs and other bad actors. In the process, they also intercepted illegal aliens in their attempts to cross into the USA. Sometimes their intervention saved the lives of illegal aliens from harm dealt out by the gangs, the coyotes, and indeed, even the Mexican policia!

Wambaugh has written many superb police accounts based on fact. He presents them with grit, humor, and truth.

An Incredible Story, But Gets Lost In the Telling

Lines and Shadows relates an amazing series of events on the US/Mexican border. The book describes either a very heroic group of San Diego police officers, or an out-of-control group of gunslingers, depending on how you look at things. The events occurred in the 1980's, although the book is fairly recent.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* The story is truly amazing, bordering on unbelievable. I won't spoil the details for anyone, but if this was a work of fiction, you'd think it was over the top. In a nutshell, a group of San Diego police officers form a special task force to combat violence in the border crossing area...and become quite violent themselves.

* Wambaugh seems to have spent quite a bit a time with at least some of the principals in the group. There are some very detailed recollections of events, dialogs and thoughts. The story is fairly complete, and takes us through a whole phase in the officer's lives. Wambaugh captures much of the darker side of police officer's lives, including infidelity, alcoholism and a few assorted felonies.

* The story is spell-binding, and I got sucked up into reading the book. I won't say that it reached "can't put it down" status, but I did keep going back to it and wanted to see how it ended.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* I have never been a fan of Joseph Wambaugh's style. The story seems to get lost in his attempts to capture witty dialog, cool language and clever turns of phrase. I found some of the individual events difficult to comprehend and am still not sure I understand what happened in several of them.

* The text seems to repeat itself, and many of the descriptions just run together. As a brief example, the 393rd time the environment and inhabitants of the area are described as "smelling like garbage", I was more than ready to concede the point. Many of the descriptions and dialogs seem quite detailed for events that happened nearly 30 years ago.

* My biggest complaint is the shallowness of the story. The book relates a fascinating tale of meeting criminal violence with police violence. There were some very positive results, along with some rather nasty events. It would have been nice if the author had stepped back a bit and examined the larger implications of this. More simply, did the end justify the means?

=== Summary ===

If you are a fan of police stories, this one is fairly unusual and different from the usual one. It reads much like Wambaugh's other books, which have always struck me as more of a proposal for a screenplay than serious works of non-fiction. But the book is readable, the story is fantastic, and you will walk away shaking your head. I'd recommend it for fans of the genre, but you might want to read a sample page or two and make sure you are comfortable with the author's style.

Steve Backshall is a British naturalist, writer and television presenter. Good support for the show

My son loves the show Deadly 60 so this book was much appreciated.

It covers 60 deadly creatures - some of which will surprise you - in greater detail. The book is aimed at children about the age of 10 and above, as they will benefit most from being able to read it, though any person who enjoys this sort of interest in creatures that can kill you will get some enjoyment from it.

It is not a book that is meant to be used as a reference, as information is not detailed, but adequate.

This book is great. Its a rehash of the show and gives some background on the experiences the crew had while on shoot. Really engaging for a boy (or girl) who loves the show or has yet to see it.

Great Tips - Well Worth The Buy

Underscoring the importance of a college education as well as the fact that financing a college education is no joke, this book provides advice on how best to go about attaining scholarships for tertiary education. Another important point the writer makes is that students don't necessarily have to be straight A students, sports buffs or in the cr�me de la cr�me category to earn scholarships. Sure it helps to have a few great accolades tucked under your belt when applying for a scholarship, but I think too many people use that silly myth to deter them from gaining much needed assistance.

This book is great because:

1. It provides life skills that will help readers beyond the process of scholarship applications.
2. It covers the full process of applying (Fasfa, applications, essays, interviews, post-scholarship) and includes secrets that have been vetted by current admission officers.
3. It provides tips to win a lot of money regardless of your current financial situation.

I highly recommend it!

A Usefull Book

This is a wonderful book for anyone who is taking his/her first steps on the tantric path of yoga. I enjoyed reading this book. It filled the gaps in my knowledge, and clarified doubts. It provided the rationale behind some of the common tantric practices. As a Hindu, I was reassured that the concepts that I grew up with are valid. Dr Frawleys book provides insights in to deeper aspects of tantric devotion. The author dwells in considerable detail on various facets of Shaktis and thus provides the serious practitioner with enough content to begin earnest worship. This book clearly shows that "Shakti" worship can ultimately lead to non duality.

Can anyone tell me if the Kindle edition of this book has been corrected? The version I purchased in 2011 had all the "special characters" in the mantras corrupted! :-(
