Damon and Affleck score high with Good Will Hunting

Having read all the reviews and endless adulation for this film, it's easy to see why the screenplay for Good Will Hunting snatched up an Oscar last year for Best Original Screenplay. Damon and Affleck have crafted an intelligent story that speaks volumes of humanity in the dialogue and character relationships. Characters are three-dimensional, flawed and compelling, forcing the audience to actually CARE what happens to them.
The major strength of the script is the finely-crafted monologues that Damon and Affleck give their characters: i.e. Shawn's speech to Will in Boston park is simply beautifal. Then there's Will's speech to the NSA agents which combines humour and observation in one neat little package.
The actor's performances stem from the sheer amount of subtext handed to them by Damon and Affleck in their script. Primarily, Will's path goes from frightened loud-mouth to assured and confident young man through his counseling sessions with Sean. These scenes are a joy to read as Will and Sean draw closer together by burying to the root of Will's struggle and for Sean to overcome past tragedies. Robin Williams at first seems like an odd choice for the role of Sean, but, for anyone who's seen DEAD POET'S SOCIETY will understand, approaches his role with vigour, inflecting Sean with wisdom, quiet solidarity and subtly conveys Sean's pain and anguish from a life of struggle.
Also, Affleck gets a great speech near the end of the story when Chuckie tells Will to accept his gift and to follow his heart and to stop denying himself in the eyes of others, because he has something that not many people have.
The script is also laced with some wonderful photographs from the film, which chart the progress of the story in pictures, and also includes a superb introduction from the film's director Gus Van Sant. The story is warm, deeply emotional and human, containing brilliant flashes of wit, pathos, observation and self-doubt, and I have no doubt that from this, Damon and Affleck will continue to rise and rise. Good Will Hunting reminds us that movies don't have to be about exploding asteroids, sinking ships or gratuitous car chases, they can be about the explorarion of the human condition, where the guay gets the girl and has all the answers.

Original Writing.

It is not difficult to understand why this screenplay won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. There are only so many stories to be told; the difference is how those stories are told. In a land where movies about old television shows are considered original, Hollywood is desperate for anything that looks even remotely new. The tale that Damon & Affleck (with some help from Goldman) tell is not a new one. However, it is the way they tell it that makes this story so fascinating. The characters are fleshed out, not cardboard cut-outs. The words you read actually make you care about the characters, thinking of them as real people.
Ah, the words. That's what makes this script so original. If Will, Chuckie, Sean and the rest of the clan were not so eloquent, this would just be another run of the mill buddy/romance/coming-of-age flick that just happens to star Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Robin Williams. Most people remember at least one of the wonderfully written monologues from this film, such as Will's interview with NSA or Chuckie's speech to Will about using his gift. However, the normal every day-to-day speech between the characters is written just as poetically.
Words are powerful, something we seem to forget in our modern American society. If nothing else, this screenplay is worth looking at just to refresh one's memory of how moving words can be.
A great screenplay to companion a great movie.

Very good, Will Hunting!!

"A lot of Good Will was written on such cross-country road trips. We tell each other stories while in a particular character, usually to make each other laugh or to make sure that Ben doesn't fall asleep at the wheel," says Matt. And then Gus says, "Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are describing things in their screenplay that mean so much to them that it will break your heart when you read it." Ironical as these statements may seem, they bring out the essence of the book. Written in a style that's like a country rivulet, the dialogues, laced with expletives on the surface, are a lesson in human behavior. Each character has a character that is unique, that is human, that is devoid of any celluloid syntheticity. I'm dying to see the film.

I like to keep up with each and every character (writing ...

Karen Rose has WAY TOO MANY characters in her stories. I like to keep up with each and every character (writing notes on them on paper). Many of the characters are mentioned only once and have nothing to do with the developing story and I end up with a list with many names that don't even matter. The sex part is more explicit than I care to read about, although it doesn't go on and on - but the buildup is there throughout.

Not crazy about this one

I usually love Karen Rose's books, but this one just didn't hold my interest. Usually I read a good book in about two days but I have been struggling with this one for over a week and I honestly don't think I am going to finish it, which is a shame because I am 3/4 of the way through. It just feels like too much of a struggle.

It is very well written, so that's not the problem and that's why I gave it 3 stars as opposed to 1. I just think there is too much going on. Too much killing. Too many characters. Too much to keep track of. I'm having a hard time remembering who's related to who and who fits into the rapes that happened in the previous books and keeping track of who is killing who. It's just confusing me and making the book drag. It would help if I remembered the first two books, but I read them a long time ago and I am an avid reader so I've read many books in between. And I don't want to have to go back and read them again just to understand what is going on in this one.

Like I said, it's well written. I just think there is too much going on and it makes the book drag. I do look forward to her next one though.

This was a required book for my Spanish class, however I ended up having to re-purchase it through the school, because I also needed the hard back that came along with the CD. Now I'm stuck with this extra softback book :(

ridiculously expensive

Nice format. Friendly and accessible. BUT, at this price I understand why the feds have intervened in the free market of texbook publishing. This thing is absurdly expensive. Seems to me that it can be published a whole lot cheaper than this, especially insofar as there is not much to distinguish most Intro to Spanish texbooks from each other. I can afford the cost of this book, but let's get real, not many college students have money to throw around in these sums. AND this would be only for one course. Add the workbook and we are talking about > $200.00.

Great book but missing Internet code

Book was in fine condition and shipped quickly. We did, however, discover that there is a small card that comes with this book with a code to use the connected web site. So, beware! Make sure the card code is included otherwise , like me, you will wind up paying $55 for a key code on the website.

Lots of great ideas, but

This books has some wonderful Christmas craft ideas and it certainly is beautiful to look at, but the directions are minimal at best. It assumes you have a working knowledge of dollmaking and other crafts. Another frustrating aspect is that all the suggested brand name notions and fabrics used in this book can't be bought in this country. But if you are a knowledgable crafter you will be able to make sense of the directions and you certainly can find substitutes for the various notions and fabrics. Best of all, the price is right.

This book is great for those of us who like to have a hand in creating the decorations for our living spaces. If you like to make dolls there are some unique designs in the book. All her designs are simple and easy to execute. I highly recommend this book.

Adorable! I'm Hooked!

I am new to the work and artistry of Tone Finnanger and I love it! I am an avid and experienced stitcher. For years I sewed and sold my creations at various craft fairs and bazaars. I don't do that anymore but I remain a creator of all things fabric and stitched.

I love quilting and stitchery books. Upon receiving this book, I am itching to jump in and make several of the projects for myself and for others. When deciding upon this book I was disappointed that the "Look Inside" feature was not available for it. I read the reviews and for the most part those of a negative vent were related to their disappointment that this work was redundant of her previous works. Since that is not a problem for me, I purchased it!

The sweet kitties on the cover are just the tip of the iceberg to what is inside. In addition to the kitties there are garden angels, birds, bumblebees, frogs, dragonflies, flowers, snails, and bunnies; these are shown in various ways such as clothed, mounted on stakes, with birdhouses, in gardening pots, strung as a garland, as wreaths and more. Using the designs further she shows how we can make these cuties into cards. I can't wait to make the cards as I am old-fashioned and still love to send notes via snail mail. :-)

In addition to the darling designs Ms. Finnanger's color choices really suit me. They lean toward soft and muted blue-grays, subtle tans, pale sage greens, brownish red, in solids, stripes and checks. However, I believe that one can use the colors that appeal to them. I would however recommend following her suggestions and instructions of fabric type to achieve the look she demonstrates. I find her examples very appealing.

I have ordered two more of Finnanger's books... I'm on my way to becoming one of her many fans!

This book was ok. The heroine was kinda whiny and weak. The hero had no consideration for her and expected after marrying her without her knowledge or consent and dropping her with zero contact for five years, that she'd just jump into being his wife. It was kind of a unbelievable story line. I mean what women after not hearing from a guy for 5 years would jump into bed with a guy. I mean even a guy she loved she'd be pissed and bitter enough to put up some fight! And why make her such a wuss? She's scared of spiders, animals, bugs, water, flying, driving, strangers, etc. couldn't she just have one phobia? It makes her very unlikable. You think "oh she's got her stuff together" in the beginning of the book only to find out he owned her apartment building. All her neighbors and maintenance guy are bodyguards. Her neighbor/friend that helps her with her son is a hired nanny. Her job is a company he bought so she could get paid a lot to do easy work. She just annoyed me.

Did not finish reading, stopped at 60% -- I don't feel love between the main characters

I bought this book because I really liked "The Sheik's Angry Bride" and I decided to go back and read Zahir's story. I don't care for Callie in this story. She is too negative when it comes to Zahir. She doesn't want anything to do with him, she doesn't want to go back to his country, she doesn't want him to know about his son (moot point), she doesn't want to believe they are married, she doesn't believe in the peace negotiations with his warring countries, she doesn't agree with the way he's trying to raise his son for responsibility, she is denying her attraction and her place in Zahir's life. After five years, Zahir comes to get his family to bring them back home. But I do not feel any love there, more like an obligation. All we get are references about her time in captivity, we are not told the story in that timeline, it is five years later. She is jealous of his time with his son, because now she has to share him, when it used to be only the two of them (mother and son).

but more info would've been nice. Same with Zahir and his being tortured

Ms. E's book is delightful as always, with enough humor, romance, and dialogue to keep it interesting. The characters are well-developed and the book moves right along. I would've given Ms. E. 5 stars but there were too many unanswered questions in my mind. For example (to name a few):

1. This book picks up from the book "Dancing with the Dangerous Prince" that involved Crown Prince Zoran of Larcatia and Princess Ciara of Altair. If Sheik Zahir is now the ruler of Larcatia, what happend to Zoran and Ciara? We they exiled? Killed? All that is mentioned is that there was a "dramatic change in the leadership of the other 3 countries" and "last of the old guard died 6 months ago". I would think the parents of Zoran and Ciara might have died, but them? They were young and just beginning their married lives when the war broke out.

2. Is Zahir a younger brother of Zoran? Cousin? I'm confused.

3. The book ended upbruptly with Callie refusing to tell Zahir about her kidnapping and she finds out Zahir had been tortured, but he won't talk about that either. I guess they go merrily on their way. What really happened with Callie when she was kidnapped? She makes references to it and the reader can fill in the blanks to a certain extent, but more info would've been nice. Same with Zahir and his being tortured. It had to have impacted his life. (Although this question would've been nice to have answered it isn't vital to the story.)

4. They were separated for 5 years, we know Callie lived in Virginia, where she worked and what she did at her job. We know about Luca too, but what about Zahir? He just fought and negotiated for the whole 5 years?

I think if the book had been longer, Ms. E. would've had time to address these issues. I love her books and am so disappointed when they end. I'm just getting ready to settle down for a good read, when the book is over and I think to myself, "What? It just started."

Vinay Singh

Vinay Singh has MBA and BE (CS) degrees and is a SAP HANA/BI architect at Freudenberg Sealing Technology, Germany, working in the SAP Analytics area. He has nearly 10 years of SAP experience in the field of SAP product development and consulting. Before joining Freudenberg, he worked with companies such as SAP Labs, Adobe, and T-systems, which gave him a good mix of product development and consulting experience. He has been an author and coauthor on numerous articles in various journals and has officially reviewed a couple of books on SAP Analytics topics. He is also a visiting faculty at Hochschule Furtwangen University, BW, where he teaches SAP HANA under the SAP UCC program.

Real Time Analytics with SAP HANA

Real Time analytic-es is one of the most attractive BI topics nowadays. This was impossible or very expensive at near past; but we can use advanced technologies like SAP HANA to achieve this dream.
I was a student for the Author "Vinay Singh" by attending one of the Official SAP training. I have to say that Vinay is a very knowledgeable person who have a great skills to teach and being one whom working in SAP Labs and one of the early first people whom get the chance to see how SAP HANA started and evolved. So, I was very interested to read this book.
The author did a really very good job here as he started with some introductory chapters to setup the basics which required to understand the remaining chapters. Topics like difference between traditional database and in-memory database, joins, union, procedures and scripts in SAP HANA are discussed in the first chapter. The author moves to explain SAP HANA Studio and and different modeling techniques like (attribute views, analytical views and calculation views). After that; the author start talking about data loading and how we can use replication techniques like SAP HANA SLT to instant data replication into SAP HANA.
I really liked the self-study questions which added by end of each chapter; this is an amazing way to help understanding topics and do more re-search. Finally; I would like to thank the Author for his effort and looking for more great SAP HANA Books

What you expect from the book

SAP is a vast ocean with new frontiers opening up. This make it very difficult to find the relevant material or reading options. I searched and went through details before buying this book for our company. This books contains lot of examples which make it easy to follow. I skipped the chapters which were not relevant for me and I was still able to follow the content of the relevant sections.

This book helped in gaining more insight on HANA studio and various data models. Kudos to author and 5 stars from me.

A Real Step by Step Book

As SAP consultant, I receive many emails asking: What is HANA and why is so important? The answer is: If you know the value of Google as a person, you'll know the value of HANA as corporate executive. For this reason I feel honored of being the technical reviewer of this book, because it definitely spreads innovation.

Vinay has a great talent on teaching and explaining, so you don't need to be a super technical person to get all the concepts and steps shared on this book. This is a golden book for people, programmers and consultants looking for knowledge and simplicity into SAP HANA's analytics. Every chapter is so well described that you don't need to read it twice, but for sure you will keep it next to you as your practical guide.
