8 is the number

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black's new play 8, a drama based on the litigation to overturn California's Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that reversed the state supreme court's ruling recognizing a constitutional right to same-sex unions..The play is a powerful account of the case filed by the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) in the U.S. District Court in 2010 to overturn Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that eliminated the rights of same-sex couples to marry in the state of California. Framed around the trial's historic closing arguments in June 2010, 8 provides an intimate look what unfolded when the issue of same-sex marriage was on trial.. If that doesn't wet your interest in listening to this audio play, Nothing will!
To add fuel to your wanting to listen to this, the star studded cast in to die for in any audio work.I do not usually rave and list a cast, but this line up of actors doing a play for audio is mind-blowing. The cast includes George Clooney as David Boies , Brad Pitt as Chief Judge Vaughn Walker, Martin (The West Wing) Sheen as Theodore B. Olson . Kevin Bacon as Charles Cooper, Jamie Lee Curtis as Sandy Stier ,Christine (Chicago Hope) Lahti as Kris Perry , John C. Reilly as David Blankenhorn ,Jane (Glee) Lynch as Maggie Gallagher ,Jesse Tyler (Modern Family) Ferguson as Dr. Ilan Meyer ,Matthew (Glee) Morrison as Paul Katami , Yeardley (Lisa from the Simpsons) Smith as Dr. Nancy Cott , Chris (Glee) Colfer as Ryan Kendall,Matt (White Collar,Magic Mike) Bomer as Jeff Zarrillo and George Takei as Dr. William Tam ..So are you intrigued yet?
The director of this audio production is Rob Reiner. He paces the actors with a swiftness you would see (or hear in this case) in a major motion picture. The actors make this play something of a great theater expierence that will stay with you, the listener, for weeks to come after you heard this.Reiner's first fray into the audio medium should not be his last.
A listener emailed me this question "Would this transcript like this transferred to audio bore the listener?" I say NOT at all. It is revealing to all sides of the issue. It is not just about a moral dilemma of same sex unions, it is about if government needs to be in our lives. The cast is wonderful, but the text makes this project something to listen to. Mr. Black wrote a script that has many facets like a diamond does...and it will interest you more and more.
Don't Miss it!

If you have 2 hours before the kids are due at soccer practice, listen!

So first off, yes I am biased. I have relatives who married in CA during the time that same sex marriages were allowed. I've had friends in the past who dropped out of school due to severe bullying in towns where being openly gay was a no-no. This is an issue / case I care very very much about, so feel free to take this review with a grain of salt.
That said this play is amazing. It's funny. It's sad. It's real. It definitely is going to appeal to people with my views more than the other side though it does present the other side -- just not in a way they'll want to be seen. That's not to say their core arguments were not presented here, they were -- just by the biggest baffoons possible (kudos to George Takei and John C. Reilly for making me laugh instead of wanting to throw things as they presented such ridiculous arguments - such as they were). People who felt the judge was biased might want to listen to this telling of the case to see just how silly it can sound.
Mainly a cut of court transcript highlights, we do get to know (a little) how the people fighting for their rights were feeling as they prepared to enter the courts and how they felt after - the best of these scenes being when we meet the sons of two women plaintiffs.
I'm not sure that just listening is enough, I may have to catch this live. Still, if I don't manage to catch it on stage, the audio alone is brilliant. Highly recommend this.

Amazing!
By Kelvin L. Reed
"8" by Dustin Lance Black (L.A. Theatre Works, 2012) is a two-hour audio dramatization of the 2010 federal trial in which arguments for and against California’s Proposition 8 were heard. (That ballot initiative recognized marriage in the state as only between a man and a woman.) The dramatic reading before a live audience is amazing, featuring a cast of famous actors including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, Christine Lahti, Jamie Lee Curtis, and George Takei. The interviews with the actors, writer, director and real victorious attorneys were very informative. Highly recommended.
